Canada’s most-used emojis ahead of World Emoji Day reveal a country that laughs loudly, loves deeply, and still remembers Wordle

On the occasion of World Emoji Day(July 17), here’s a closer look at Canada’s most-used emojis that offers surprising and endearing insights into how Canadians express themselves online.

A recent study by Crossword-Solver, which analyzed over 9 million geotagged tweets, has revealed the country’s top 10 emojis, uncovering an emotional blueprint of the Canadian digital identity.

At number one is the iconic Face with Tears of Joy emoji (��), used 155 times per 10,000 tweets.

Following closely in second place is the Red Heart emoji (❤️), a universal expression of love, care, and emotional warmth. With 146 uses per 10,000 tweets, this emoji shows that Canadians aren’t shy about showing affection.

Taking third place is the Rolling on the Floor Laughing emoji (��), with 116 uses. Slightly more animated than its upright counterpart, this emoji proves that when Canadians laugh, they commit to it.

In a twist few expected, with 108 and 93 uses respectively, the fourth and fifth most-used emojis are the Wordle green square (��) and yellow square (��), both nods to the wildly popular word-guessing game that dominated social media feeds during the COVID-19 era.

Coming in sixth is the Canadian flag emoji, astrong display of national pride. Used 86 times per 10,000 tweets, it speaks to how Canadians enjoy representing their country online, especially during events like the Olympics and Canada Day.

The seventh most-used emoji is another Wordle icon, the black square (⬛), appearing 66 times per 10,000 tweets. Combined with its green and yellow counterparts, it shows how deeply the puzzle game’s color language became embedded in online interaction.

The Praying Hands emoji (��), a symbol of gratitude, spirituality, and hope. It has 63 appearances per 10,000 tweets.

The Fire emoji (��) with 56 uses. Typically used to describe something exciting, trendy, or impressive.

Rounding out the top 9 is the Heart Eyes emoji (��), used 55 times per 10,000 tweets.
