An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 401 in Cobourg, Ontario, on Monday (April 27, 2026), the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said. The crash involved only the motorcycle, the OPP said in a news release. The deceased officer was identified as Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, Northumberland Detachment, Central Region, according to the OPP Association. He lost his life while being on duty in Cobourg.

“It is with great sadness that the Ontario Provincial Police Association confirms the line of duty death of Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, Northumberland Detachment, Central Region, who died on duty in Cobourg,” OPP Association said in a post on Instagram.

“We thank Members for their patience as this information was withheld to ensure Sergeant Malcolm’s family was notified appropriately, in coordination with policing partners,” it further stated.

The OPP stated that members of their Northumberland detachment were called to the highway near Burnham Street North shortly after 5:30 p.m. for reports of a single-vehicle crash. Police said that the officer was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.

According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, police are not ruling out the possibility that another vehicle was involved but said there is no evidence to indicate that. "Hearts are broken, the OPP right across this province. Hearts are shattered right now," Carrique told reporters in Cobourg on Monday night (April 27, 2026), as quoted by CBC.

"He was living his best life as a police officer, a very proud member of our golden helmets, the precision motorcycle team, a skilled motor officer, and doing an incredible job serving this province and dedicated to his community," he was quoted by CBC as saying. "I will forever grateful to him for his service. He was taken far too soon under such tragic circumstances."
