Who is Warren Foegele? LA Kings trade Canadian left-winger to Ottawa Senators for second-round pick

In a notable move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, Canadian left winger Warren Foegele was traded by the Los Angeles Kings to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. In exchange, the Kings received a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and both teams also agreed to swap conditional third-round selections in the same draft. The trade represents an important change for both Foegele and the Kings as the team looks to reshape its roster during the season. Meanwhile, the Senators hope to strengthen their offensive depth by adding a player with Foegele’s experience and proven ability to contribute on the scoresheet.


The 29-year-old forward has built a reputation as a reliable two-way winger known for his energy, physical play, and effectiveness on the penalty kill. During the 2025-26 NHL season with the Kings, he recorded nine points - seven goals and two assists - in 47 games.


According to the NHL, the forward still has one year remaining on the three-year, $10.5 million contract he signed with Los Angeles on July 1, 2024. The deal carries an average annual value of $3.5 million, meaning Ottawa will also gain a player who is under contract through next season.

Originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round (No. 67 overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Foegele has developed into a steady NHL contributor. Across 560 regular-season games with the Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, and Kings, he has produced 218 points, including 111 goals and 107 assists. He has also contributed 27 points in 86 Stanley Cup Playoffs games.

At the time of the trade, Ottawa held a 29-22-9 record and sat sixth in the Atlantic Division, six points behind the Boston Bruins for the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card position. Meanwhile, Los Angeles stood at 24-22-14, trailing the Seattle Kraken by five points for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.
