Dwayne Johnson's new project,“The Smashing Machine,” portrays MMA legend Mark Kerr’s turbulent rise and fall
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to make a dramatic leap in his career with his upcoming biopic of UFC fighter Mark Kerr, “The Smashing Machine”, which has already generated buzz for the Oscars. But who exactly is the man behind this biopic, Mark Kerr?

Mark Kerr was born on December 21, 1968, and he is a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and a World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. A towering figure in MMA, Kerr earned the nickname ‘The Smashing Machine’ for his dominance in the ring.

He attended Syracuse University, where he became a Wrestling Champion in 1992 at 190 pounds. Post-college, Kerr competed internationally, securing a gold medal at the 1994 World Cup and a silver at the 1995 Pan American Games in the 100 kg category.

Following a final loss in 2009 and public concern about his safety in the ring, Kerr effectively retired from professional fighting.

After retiring, he pursued a degree in pharmaceutical sales and worked at a Toyota dealership till 2015, and in 2019, he revealed he had been battling peripheral neuropathy since 2016, a nerve condition causing chronic pain and weakness.

His story became the talk of the town after the 2002 HBO documentary “The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.”

But like every coin has two sides, his career too was filled with struggles and pain. His rise in the world of MMA was accompanied by substance abuse as his addiction and dependence on painkillers to manage the physical toll of the sport nearly destroyed him and his career.

He also shared an unhealthy relationship with his ex-wife, Dawn Staples. Due to these reasons, his physical and mental health deteriorated, which ultimately affected his professional career as a fighter.

His story reminds the hidden struggles and challenges of an athlete behind the camera.

Johnson has transformed himself into an MMA and UFC fighter for this upcoming project. The film is written and directed by Benny Safdie and is expected to be released on October 3, 2025. The film also stars Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples.

This project represents a departure for Johnson from his usual roles in the Fast and Furious franchise, Jumanji, and Moana as he marks a deep emotional shift by portraying a fighter suffering from addiction and personal demons.

"I'm at this point in my career where I want more," Johnson said, "And I don't mean I want more box office. I mean, I want more humanity. And that is why Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative, hungry partner for me."

Fans and critics are excited to see Dwayne Johnson take on this dramatic role, marking a significant departure from his usual action-packed characters, with many predicting this could be a career defining performance for him.
