Colleen Jones, a two-time World women’s curling champion and longtime Canadian broadcaster, has died at 65 after a three-year battle with cancer, her son Luke announced on Tuesday, reported Canadian Press. A towering figure in the sport, Jones captained one of the most successful curling teams in history, leading Canada to world titles in 2001 and 2004 and earning multiple national Scotties Tournament of Hearts wins.

According to SSBCrack News, Jones also set a remarkable record by appearing in 21 Scotties Tournament of Hearts national championships, giving her more games played at the event than any other curler in its history. She later added to her legacy by leading Canada to the world senior women’s title in 2017.

Off the ice, she became a respected voice in Canadian media, working for CBC for over nearly four decades and helping bring curling to a wider audience with her sharp analysis and warm presence. A Halifax native, Jones was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2022.

Honoring her impact on Canadian sport, Jones was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Her broadcasting career with CBC began in 1986, when she became Halifax’s first female sports anchor. By then, she was already a rising curling star, having won her first provincial women’s title at 19 in 1979 and secured a silver medal at the Canada Games.

Jones, who became the youngest skip ever to win the championship, captured her first Canadian women’s curling title in 1982.
