Vancouver Whitecaps shock Messi’s Miami to reach historic championship final

The Vancouver Whitecaps will play their first final in the Concacaf Champions Cup after eliminating Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami with a dominating 3-1 victory on Thursday (May 1) in the second leg of their semifinal clash. The result, combined with their 2-0 win in the first leg, puts the Whitecaps at an aggregate triumph of 5-1 over the star-studded Inter Miami.

The match started with Miami’s aggressive game to overturn their two-goal deficit, and in the ninth minute, Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Jordi Alba’s smooth combination led to their first goal, giving their fans a glimmer of hope.

Although after a defensive game, the Whitecaps responded decisively in the second half after Brian White leveled the aggregate score in the 51st minute, and just two minutes later, Pedro Vite's shot put Vancouver ahead in the game. The final setback for Miami came in the 71st minute when Sebastian Berhalter capitalized on a blocked shot, making the final score 3-1.


Miami’s defense faltered under pressure despite a few late efforts from Messi and Allende.

Whitecaps coach Jesper Sørensen praised his team and said, "I'm just so happy for everybody in the club. A lot of people have worked for many years and not seen a moment like this."

The winner of the second semifinal between Mexican clubs Cruz Azul and Tigres UANL, which stands at 1-1, will meet the Whitecaps in the final game. This victory marks a historic achievement for the Whitecaps, who have previously reached the semifinals in 2017 but never advanced to the final.

Inter Miami failed to find consistency despite the presence of legends like Messi, Suárez, and Alba, and this defeat adds to the list of recent setbacks, including a 5-2 aggregate loss to Monterrey last year. Coach Javier Mascherano acknowledged the team's shortcomings, emphasizing the need to regroup and focus on upcoming challenges, including the MLS regular season and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Whitecaps have not firmly set their eyes on making history and are ready for the final chapter in their battle for Concacaf supremacy.
