What is a Black Moon?
The term “Black Moon” isn’t official in astronomy, but it’s used to describe several uncommon lunar events. The most popular definition is when two new moons happen in the same calendar month, which only happens every 2.5 to 3 years.

In August 2025, we’ll have a new moon on August 1, followed by another on August 23. Since both fall within the same month, the second one earns the title of “Black Moon.”
Why is it exciting?
Unlike a full moon, you can’t see a new moon, it’s hidden from view because its sunlit side faces away from Earth. But that’s what makes it perfect for stargazing. A new moon means no bright moonlight, so the night sky is darker. This makes it easier to see faint stars, distant galaxies, planets, and even the Milky Way, especially in rural or dark-sky areas.
A time for reflection
Though not scientifically significant, the Black Moon has long been surrounded by myths and symbolic meaning. Some cultures and spiritual communities view it as a time to let go of the old and make space for new intentions.
So whether you’re a stargazer, an astrology fan, or just enjoy a quiet night under the stars, August 23, 2025, will be a night worth stepping outside for.
