Reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, best known for his role on MTV’s The Hills and his high-profile marriage to Heidi Montag, has made startling personal revelations in his newly released memoir. In The Guy You Loved to Hate: Confessions From a Reality TV Villain, published on January 27, 2026 via Gallery Books, Pratt recounts a now-infamous episode from early in their relationship that he says almost “destroyed something beautiful.”

According to Pratt’s own account, a moment of insecurity and anger led him to deliberately provoke Montag by engaging with multiple women in a nightclub setting. Upset that she had been telling people he was “obsessed with her,” he writes that he danced with six different women in thirty minutes, a stunt he intended as a “pity party” to make her jealous rather than a genuine attempt at infidelity.

Pratt reflects on the episode with regret, describing how Montag confronted him and how “the light in her eyes … went out,” a phrase he uses to convey the emotional impact of the incident.

When he attempted to call her the next day, he found that she had changed her phone number entirely, what he characterises in the book as a “nuclear option” response that underscored how deeply his actions had wounded her.

Pratt portrays Montag’s reaction as swift and decisive. Within hours of the nightclub incident, she changed her number, cutting off contact and signalling that the stunt had crossed a line.

He recounts the emotional toll it took on him, admitting that he “knew with the kind of certainty that makes you sick, that I’d just destroyed something beautiful.”

Despite the severity of the fallout, Pratt says the couple ultimately reconciled. He describes the period that followed as one of intense introspection and remorse, and credits personalised efforts at apology and reflection for helping to rebuild the relationship.

Today, Pratt and Montag remain married, and Pratt’s narrative frames the episode as a pivotal learning moment in their life together.

The Guy You Loved to Hate is positioned by Pratt as more than a celebrity tell-all, it is a confessional aimed at revealing the real person behind the public persona once labelled “reality TV’s greatest villain.”

While the six-woman incident grabs headlines, Pratt also reflects on broader themes of ego, insecurity, and the challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship under the glare of public scrutiny.
