BC south coast on alert as high tides and storm surge raise flood risks
A rare alignment of extreme high tides, the Earth’s closest approach to the Sun and an incoming low-pressure system has prompted Environment Canada to warn of possible coastal flooding this weekend along British Columbia’s south coast.

The agency says higher water levels are expected as high astronomical tides coincide with the Earth’s closest point to the Sun and an approaching low-pressure system. Forecasters say the timing of the low-pressure system remains uncertain, but the greatest risk of coastal flooding is expected on Sunday(January 4).

Environment Canada warns that the interaction of weather conditions and the Earth’s close position to the Sun could push storm surges beyond normal tide levels, increasing the risk of erosion, debris and minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

The agency says “significant” coastal flooding is possible if strong onshore winds coincide with high tides, potentially making roads hazardous due to floodwaters and debris.

According to the Global News website, the affected area includes the coasts of Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria, the Sunshine Coast north to Powell River, the east coast of Vancouver Island from Campbell River to the Gulf Islands, and the island’s west coast from Sooke to Tofino and beyond.

The city says the greatest flooding risk is expected Sunday, when water levels are forecast to be the highest Vancouver has seen in the past four years.

“City crews will conduct regular inspections of tide gates and a drone will be used to assess the condition of the Southlands shoreline dike,” the statement said. Residents are urged to stay informed by monitoring updated alerts and forecasts in the coming days.
