Quote of the day by William Shakespeare
Curtains rise. Lights shift. Characters step forward, speak their lines, and fade into the wings. Whether we realize it or not, each of us moves through life much like an actor in a vast, ever-changing play, stepping into roles, shedding identities, and evolving with every act. Few writers captured this theatrical essence of human existence as powerfully as William Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) remains one of the most influential literary figures in history. An English playwright, poet and actor, Shakespeare authored 39 plays, 154 sonnets and several long narrative poems.

His works, including Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and King Lear, continue to shape literature, theatre and language itself. Writing during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, Shakespeare had an extraordinary ability to distill universal human truths into poetic lines that resonate centuries later.

One such truth appears in his pastoral comedy, As You Like It, first performed around 1599.

Quote of the day:
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.

They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts.”

In this famous monologue, spoken by the character Jaques, Shakespeare presents life as a theatrical performance. The “stage” is the world itself, and every person is an actor who enters at birth and exits at death. Throughout a lifetime, each individual assumes many roles, child, student, lover, parent, worker, leader, elder.

The quote suggests that identity is not fixed. We evolve. We adapt to circumstances. We step into responsibilities and relationships that shape who we are in each season of life. Just as actors change costumes and characters, human beings transition through stages defined by age, experience and social roles.

At a deeper level, the passage also carries a gentle reminder of impermanence. No role lasts forever. Success, failure, youth, power, all are temporary acts in a larger production. Recognizing this can foster humility, perspective and empathy. Everyone is performing their part, navigating their own script of challenges and triumphs.
