Lee Kuan Yew's AI sketch.
At a time when many people are struggling with the decision or ability to have a child—due to economic pressure, health challenges, social expectations, or state policies - the idea of reproduction as a fundamental human right remains deeply contested. The question is no longer just who can have children, but who can afford to, who feels supported enough to do so, and who bears the responsibility for raising the next generation in an increasingly unequal world.

This tension highlights a broader debate about societal progress. While the right to have children belongs to every individual, the conditions that shape parenthood, education, healthcare, employment, and social safety nets are far from equal. When systems fail to provide these foundations, the burden of responsibility shifts almost entirely onto individuals, turning a basic human right into a source of anxiety and struggle. The founding father of modern Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, may have some answer to this in his own interpretation.

Today’s quote by Lee Kuan Yew: ‘Every person, genius or moron, has a right to reproduce himself.’

Meaning of the quote

One meaning of this statement is the affirmation of a fundamental human right. Lee Kuan Yew is stating that the ability to have children belongs to every individual, regardless of intelligence, talent, or social standing. No government, ideology, or group has the moral authority to decide who is worthy of reproducing.

At the same time, the blunt wording reflects his pragmatic worldview. Lee often spoke candidly about population, education, and governance, and the quote recognizes a difficult reality: while everyone has equal rights, the outcomes of those rights can shape society in unequal ways. Acknowledging this tension does not mean endorsing discrimination; it highlights the limits of state control over personal freedom.

Ultimately, this meaning points to a broader idea: societal progress should come from strengthening education, opportunity, and responsibility, not from restricting personal rights. Even if demographic trends raise concerns, the answer lies in improving systems, not denying individuals their basic freedoms.

Born in Singapore in 1923, he was educated at Raffles College before going on to study at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, in England. In 1954, Lee co-founded the People’s Action Party (PAP) and served as its Secretary-General until 1992. His political rise coincided with Singapore’s push for self-governance, and in 1959 he became the country’s first Prime Minister. He went on to serve successive terms for more than three decades, overseeing Singapore’s transformation from a colonial port into a modern, globally connected city-state, before stepping down in November 1990.

After resigning as Prime Minister, Lee continued to play a central role in government. He was appointed Senior Minister by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and was reappointed following the 1991, 1997 and 2001 general elections. In August 2004, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong named him Minister Mentor, a position he held until May 2011, after which he became Senior Advisor to the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Lee Kuan Yew died on March 23, 2015, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Singapore’s political and economic development.
