‘President Trump, stay out of our election’ and ‘we decide what happens here’: Poilievre-Carney unison on ‘51st State’ taunt

President Trump’s latest remarks on Canada’s sovereignty sparked swift backlash from Canadian leaders as voters headed to the polls
On the election day, Canadians awoke to a familiar provocation from the US President Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social with a bombshell declaration repeating his desire,” Elect the man who will make Canada the 51st state.”

He also described Canada as “a stunning landmass” and labeled the border between the two nations as an “artificial line drawn long ago.”

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, was quick to fire back as he said, "President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box. Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent, and we will NEVER be the 51st state." He urged Canadians to "vote for change," promising to "strengthen our country, stand on our own two feet, and stand up to America from a position of strength."

Without mentioning Trump by name, Carney replied through a video with a simple message: "This is Canada, and we decide what happens here."

This is not the first time he has made such remarks. President Trump has consistently argued that Canada “doesn’t make sense” as an independent nation and should instead become part of the United States, undermining Canada’s sovereignty.

To push his point and pressure Canada, his tariffs on Canada have pushed the country toward a recession. His controversial remarks helped the Liberal Party gain maximum votes in the 2025 federal election and weaken the once-powerful Conservatives.

Some saw it as a subtle show of support for Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader, who is often viewed as a close ideological ally of Mr. Trump and has faced criticism from voters for being too much like the former U.S. president.

Trump isn’t letting go of his obsession with Canada in the near future, and whoever forms the next government will have to face a U.S. president who is not only hurting Canada’s economy with tariffs but also eyeing the country.
