The confetti has settled, the cheers have faded, and now, the hard work begins.

For Mark Carney's Liberals, fresh from their election victory, the immediate future is a flurry of deadlines and crucial decisions.

Canadians, eager to see the newly elected government in action, are asking: what comes next?

The first task at hand is cabinet selection, a process complicated by the retention of numerous familiar faces from the previous administration.

"There wasn’t a lot of turnover in his party, so he’s going to have to build a government out of people who, in many cases, were kind of tired and bereft of ideas going into this election, or at least seen that way by Canadians," observes Peter Graefe, a political science professor at McMaster University.

This challenge of injecting fresh energy into a seasoned team is a key hurdle for Carney. Graefe anticipates a swift cabinet announcement and a budget presentation within the next month, as the government seeks to establish its agenda.

Adding to the urgency is the looming expiration of special warrants, which have allowed limited government spending during the election period.

The government must also table its main spending estimates by early June, a critical step in outlining its fiscal priorities.

"I would presume he wants to get a cabinet sworn in and move to a budget probably within the next 30 days," Graefe states, emphasizing the need for rapid action.

The House of Commons sitting calendar indicates a potential return on May 16, but these dates are flexible.

Carney is expected to prioritize a swift return to Parliament, ensuring the passage of essential legislation before the summer recess.

"The government will want to get into that relatively quickly, so that it can be done and passed and they can go off and have the summer to plan for the real heart of what the government hopes to do when they come back in the fall," Graefe explains.

The backdrop to this political activity is the ongoing tension with the United States, a consequence of President Trump's trade war.

Carney's government must navigate these international complexities while addressing pressing domestic needs. The coming weeks will be a crucial test of the new administration's ability to balance urgency with strategic planning.
