The flight, traveling from Hamilton, Ontario, to Vancouver, British Columbia, diverted to Regina at approximately 8:20 pm local time. According to Porter Airlines, the captain chose to land the aircraft as a precaution.
“The captain elected to land in Regina as a precaution due to the smell of smoke in the cabin, although none was visible,” the airline said in a statement to CTV News.
Regina Airport Authority CEO James Bogusz confirmed the emergency protocol was activated. “Pilots declared an emergency, and they landed at the airport for a diversion,” Bogusz said. “Our emergency crews did respond, but it did land safely.”
There were 91 passengers on board. All were evacuated safely and escorted to the terminal.
“Our emergency responders responded promptly,” Bogusz added. “A big thanks to our mutual aid partners in the City of Regina. They’re part of a big part of our emergency response plan.”
Porter Airlines said the passengers will stay in hotels overnight and continue their journey to Vancouver on a different aircraft on Wednesday.
“We appreciate the Regina Airport’s support on the ground and the patience of passengers as we prioritize safe operations,” a spokesperson said.
There were no injuries reported, and airport operations were not affected. Regina International Airport remains open and fully operational.
