The Wabaseemoong Independent Nations, comprising One Man Lake, Swan Lake, and Whitedog communities, have faced recurring wildfire threats.
Since Chief Scott assumed leadership in 2019, the community has experienced three evacuations and six emergencies, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability to such disasters. He expressed the emotional toll these events take on residents, noting the constant anxiety during fire seasons.
Firefighting efforts are ongoing, with approximately 100 firefighters, including 20 from British Columbia, combating multiple fires near the community. These include a 0.3-square-kilometer blaze just over a kilometer from the community and a larger fire spanning 90 square kilometers.
This evacuation is part of a broader wildfire crisis in Canada, with approximately 100 active fires reported across Manitoba and Ontario as of mid-May 2025.
How can communities prepare for wildfire season?
