Why Conservative MP crosses the floor
Ma, first elected in this year’s federal election, said the decision came “after listening carefully to the people of Markham–Unionville in recent weeks and reflecting with my family on the direction of our country, I have informed the Speaker and the Leader of the Opposition that I will be joining Prime Minister Mark Carney in the government caucus. This is a time for unity and decisive action for Canada’s future,” he wrote.
Ma added that Prime Minister Mark Carney is “offering the steady, practical approach” needed “to deliver on the priorities I hear every day,” which he says include affordability and the economy.
Conservative MP Todd Doherty noted in a post that Ma attended the Conservative Party Christmas party on Wednesday night and posed for a photo with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. He becomes the third Conservative MP since November to leave the party.

Who is Michael Ma?
Michael Ma, born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, has a life story marked by hardship and perseverance. The youngest of seven children, he immigrated to Canada at age 12, only to lose his father in a fatal drunk-driving incident two months later. Ma worked a series of part-time and seasonal jobs through his youth to help support his family, eventually completing his education in Vancouver and earning degrees in Computer Science and an MBA.
Elected as the Member of Parliament for Markham–Unionville, he has positioned himself as a proponent of fiscal responsibility, fair immigration policy, and community safety, saying he is driven by a belief that Canadians of all backgrounds should have an equal chance to succeed.
