Alberta reported 326 confirmed cases beginning March till May 9, the largest outbreak in recent years.
Alberta is experiencing a concerning rise in measles cases, with health experts warning the outbreak could worsen if vaccination rates don’t improve. Alberta reported 326 confirmed cases beginning March till May 9, which marks the largest outbreak in recent years.

What is the current situation of the Measles outbreak

Health authorities say 97 of the cases involve children under five, a group particularly vulnerable to the disease. Three people are currently in intensive care due to severe complications from measles. Most cases, around 200, are concentrated in the South Health Zone, including communities such as Lethbridge, Taber, and Medicine Hat. Another 86 cases have been reported in the Central Zone.

What is the vaccination status of the Measles outbreak

The measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine effectively prevents measles. Health experts stress that two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against the disease. Despite this, vaccination rates in some communities remain below the recommended levels, increasing the risk of outbreaks.

According to Alberta Health, of the 254 cases with known vaccination status, the breakdown reveals that 229 individuals were unvaccinated, 12 had received only one dose, 7 were fully vaccinated with two or more doses, and 6 had an unknown vaccination status.

What do the experts say

Medical professionals warn that declining vaccination rates can lead to the resurgence of diseases once considered under control. Dr. James Talbot, Alberta’s former Chief Medical Health Officer, warned that the real number of infections may be higher, as some cases may still be unreported or in incubation.

In response to the situation, Health Minister Adriana LaGrange has launched a province-wide campaign urging residents to get vaccinated. “Don’t get measles. Get vaccinated,” the campaign states.

As the outbreak continues, health experts stress that widespread immunization is the best defense against the highly contagious disease.

Alberta Health Services is actively monitoring the situation and has initiated contact tracing to prevent further spread. They recommend that anyone exhibiting symptoms of measles should isolate immediately and contact healthcare providers before visiting clinics or hospitals to avoid exposing others.

FAQs

What is Measles?

Measles is a very contagious infection that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

How do you treat measles in children?

Measles treatment in children is supportive, including fever reducers, fluids, and managing complications like bacterial infections. Vitamin A is given to reduce severity: 50,000 IU (<6 months), 100,000 IU (6–11 months), and 200,000 IU (≥12 months) once daily for 2 days. Isolation and monitoring are essential. There is no antiviral cure.
