Legendary Jazz Pianist Oscar Peterson will be commemorated by the Royal Canadian Mint with the launch of a special coin at an event in Toronto this morning. Peterson was one of the leading pianists of his times and is considered a music legend.
The launch event shall be attended by Kelly Peterson, the widow of the late music legend, and Celine Peterson, his daughter. Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Finance Minister is also expected to grace the occasion.
Thompson Egbo-Egbo, Pianist and composer, will deliver a special performance in tribute to Oscar Peterson.

Oscar Peterson’s Personal Life Oscar Peterson was born in 1925 at Montreal, Canada. He won several accolades in the music world in career spanning 60 years. He has many Juno and Grammy Awards to his name. He found a place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame for his legendary service to the music industry as a leading Jazz Pianist of his generation.

Oscar derived his passion for music from his father Daniel Peterson who was a railway porter. He learned to play the trumpet and piano at the tender age of five. Later he dumped the trumpet as he fought a battle with tuberculosis but continued to play the piano. He later trained under the Hungarian Pianist Paul De Marky to polish his techniques. He soon gained popularity as a jazz artist and was often compared to the great piano artist Art Tatum.
He died at 82 of Kidney failure in the year 2007. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Kelly Peterson and Celine Peterson.
