The Toronto Maple Leafs fired Brad Treliving with under a month left in the season, prompting fans on social media to bring up former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, the timing of the decision and broader frustrations around the team’s direction.

The Maple Leafs announced on Monday, March 30 that they would “part ways” with general manager Brad Treliving after nearly three years of his stewardship. Treliving took on the role in May 2023. After two upper-division finishes, including a first-place finish in 2024-25, the Leafs have fallen off this season, dropping completely out of playoff contention.

Last season, the Leafs won a first-round playoff series against the Ottawa Senators. This season, Toronto is 14th out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference.

“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Keith Pelley said in a statement. “Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership.”

Several users voiced skepticism about the franchise’s long-term prospects. ‘Im placing a bet with sportsbet, that the next GM will also do nothing with the leafs and the leafs will not win the cup in the next 10 years. No matter who is GM or coach leafs are destined to wait 100 years for a cup.’

Others criticized the team’s management decisions following Dubas’ departure. ‘Wow finally a good transaction. Clowns ruined this team even further after Dubas left thank you shanny for that’

Some fans predicted further setbacks regardless of the next move, ‘Whatever they decide to do, it'll be an epic disaster/failure. It always is when it comes to the Leafs.’ One user commented sarcastically on the situation, ‘didn't know coaches were flammable but go off i guess’

Another post reflected frustration with the team’s core players, ‘Laughs are a mess and always have been!! Blame everyone but there core players have no nuts!! Ask Marner (Mitch Marner); he called it and got black bald!! He finally is in a better place, with improvements around the corner!
