Robert De Niro supports his daughter Airyn after she comes out as transgender
He said, "I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is. I love all my children."
While talking with Them magazine, Airyn, 29, shared her journey and discussed her transition and the challenges she faced while growing up. She also expressed gratitude to her parents for protecting her from the public and media during her formative years.
"There's a difference between being visible and being seen," Airyn said. "I've been visible. I don't think I've been seen yet." She candidly spoke about feeling like a "late bloomer," having started hormone therapy in November, and the internalized messages of not being "enough"—not skinny enough, not Black enough, not masculine enough.
While interviewing, she said that she was inspired by trailblazers like Laverne Cox, who responded with a heartfelt video message in which she said, "I want to congratulate you on embracing the beauty that you are. And I'm not talking about the outside; I'm talking about the beauty that is being trans".
This interview has sparked wide appreciation for both father and daughter. After Them’s interview was published, Airyn responded on social media, saying: “Thank you to everyone who’s been so sweet and supportive! I’m not used to all these eyes on me.”
