Canada has appointed Evan Solomon as its first-ever Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, signaling a bold step toward embracing the digital future.

Solomon, a former journalist and newly elected Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, was sworn in on May 13, 2025, during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to create a dedicated AI ministry underscores the government's commitment to positioning Canada as a global leader in artificial intelligence.

The Liberal platform emphasizes the transformative potential of AI, stating, "Artificial intelligence is the key to unlocking productivity, higher paying jobs and new prosperity that will benefit everyone."

What will be the role of the AI Minister?

Solomon's role encompasses a wide array of responsibilities, including overseeing AI policy development, advancing AI adoption across industries, and balancing innovation with privacy and security concerns. He will also be responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, aiming to stimulate economic growth in the region.

Experts have lauded the appointment. Benjamin Bergen, president of the Council of Canadian Innovators, remarked, "The key piece here is, we've got this artificial intelligence, but then how do we actually ingest it into our society, not only from a government lens, but also from a private-sector lens as well?"

Solomon's background as a broadcaster and political journalist, with experience at CBC and CTV, equips him with the communication skills necessary for this pioneering role. His appointment comes at a time when Canada is seeking to capitalize on its strong AI research foundation and address challenges such as intellectual property retention and talent migration.

The new ministry will also focus on building Canadian-owned AI infrastructure, including data centers and high-speed communication networks, to ensure data sovereignty and economic independence.

This initiative is crucial, especially considering concerns about foreign access to sensitive data stored outside the country.
