Driver shot dead on Highway 2 near Leduc, Alberta; RCMP seek witnesses as investigation continues

A driver was killed after a weapon was fired at a car on a highway in Alberta, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) says. According to the RCMP in Alberta, the incident occurred on March 14, 2026, at around 2:50 p.m. on Highway 2 near Township Road 490. Police said a white or grey pickup truck was seen pulling up beside a black 2012 Honda Civic shortly before the shooting.

“Shortly after, the truck sped off while the Honda Civic pulled over to the side of the road,” RCMP said in an update. “The investigation revealed a weapon was discharged towards the Honda Civic, resulting in the death of the driver.”

Authorities said the case is now being handled by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, which is seeking public assistance to identify the vehicle involved and gather additional evidence.


Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage from the area to come forward. “If anyone witnessed the incident, or may have dashcam footage, please contact the RCMP,” officials said in the statement.

Investigators also advised earlier that Highway 2 between Leduc and Township Road 490 has been closed as officers continue their investigation.
