A popular garlic powder sold at Dollarama stores across Canada has been recalled after officials warned it may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the recall notice for Heavenly Spices Garlic Powder on July 15, advising consumers not to use, sell, serve, or distribute the affected product. The recall applies to products sold nationwide and online.

The affected product is Heavenly Spices Garlic Powder (70 g) with UPC 6 67888 50634 7 and best-before code: 2029 JAN 30 GP 30ZV PIT. The recall is identified under RA-82337.

Why was the garlic powder recalled?

According to the CFIA, the product is being recalled because of possible contamination with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can contaminate food and cause illness. The agency instructed consumers and retailers not to use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled garlic powder.

As per Cleveland Clinic, Bacillus cereus is a type of bacteria that causes ‘food poisoning.’ It can be from rice, meats, sauces, dairy, and other foods. This contamination causes vomiting or diarrhea that may last for a day or two.
