Country music icon Mark Chesnutt, known for his neo-traditionalist country sound, recently opened up about a life-threatening medical emergency that led to emergency heart surgery in an exclusive interview with American Songwriter. The singer shared the shocking moment when he was "bleeding out from the inside" and facing severe complications.

In the interview, Chesnutt revealed that doctors warned him of the dire situation he was in. “They basically told me they were gonna get me over this, and I was going to be fine, and they could fix everything wrong with me,” Chesnutt said. However, the doctors emphasized that if he were to go home and resume drinking, his life could be in danger. “If I went home and started drinking again, I’d be back in a matter of days, and I might not leave alive,” he explained.

After his emergency quadruple bypass surgery last June, Chesnutt took some time to recover, which led to the cancellation of several shows. A post from Chesnutt’s Instagram account on June 18, 2024, announced the surgery and confirmed that he would need to rest for a while. However, the singer soon updated his followers with positive news, saying he had “got a new heart” and was recovering comfortably at home.

With his health now stabilized, Chesnutt is gearing up for his 2025-2026 Redemption Tour, set to begin in May. The tour will mark his return to the stage after a challenging year of recovery and self-reflection. Chesnutt shared how the experience of surviving heart surgery and the journey of sobriety had transformed his outlook on life. “I almost died,” he said. “I worked through that after the heart surgery, did more therapy, took another three months off, and now I’m back and doing better than average.”
