In her second-round match at the 2025 Berlin Open, world No. 2 and newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff was defeated 6‑3, 6‑3 by China’s Xinyu Wang on Thursday, June 19, 2025. This marked her first match on grass since she captured the French Open title 12 days ago.

Wang, the no. 49 entered the main draw via qualifying and dominated. She broke Gauff’s serve early and maintained control throughout both sets. Wang’s totals came to one ace, one double fault, and 57% first-serve accuracy, winning 77% of those points and 55% of second-serves.

Gauff, meanwhile, struggled with serve consistency, delivering one ace, seven double faults, and landing only 41% of first serves. She won 75% of those points but only 41% when returning.

On break points, Wang converted four of 11 opportunities, compared to Gauff’s perfect one for one. Overall, Wang claimed 29 points to Gauff’s 18 and won twice as many games, 12 to 6.

This victory represents Wang’s third career win over a top-five opponent and her first time reaching a grass‑court quarterfinal. Her season record now stands at 14–14. Next up, she will face Paula Badosa.

Gauff’s loss drops her season record to 31–9. Despite the early exit, she will focus on Wimbledon later this month.

Gauff, a winner of 10 main tour titles including the 2023 US Open and 2024 WTA Finals, has yet to win a grass-court tournament. Previously, Wang lost to Gauff in straight sets at the 2022 Berlin grass event.

The match was particularly challenging as she had been shifting from clay to grass in under two weeks. Gauff, fresh off her emotional win at Roland‑Garros, appeared out of rhythm in Berlin.

Aryna Sabalenka, the French Open runner-up, reached the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open on Thursday by defeating Rebeka Masarova 6–2, 7–6 (6). The match had been suspended on Wednesday due to slippery court conditions caused by humidity.
