Chicago Blackhawks name Jeff Blashill head coach to rebuild roster and develop emerging stars

Jeff Blashill has been named the Chicago Blackhawks' new head coach, signaling a fresh chapter for the team as it aims to rebuild around young star Connor Bedard. The announcement came as the Blackhawks look forward after a disappointing season and the dismissal of Luke Richardson.

Blashill, 51, brings NHL coaching experience from his time with the Detroit Red Wings (2015–2022), where he oversaw a rebuilding phase similar to what the Blackhawks face now. Though his record in Detroit was mixed, he was often praised for his player development skills, which will be key in Chicago’s current roster situation.

Before joining the Red Wings, Blashill was successful in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, leading them to a Calder Cup in 2013. He most recently worked as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, a stint that gave him experience with a more seasoned and competitive team.


Chicago is banking on its developmental background to guide its young core, especially Bedard, who had a strong rookie season but needs a stable system to grow in. Blashill’s ability to build a culture and coach with patience might be what the Blackhawks need at this stage.
