The OPC reviewed the pricing of seven Canadian Tire products advertised online, in flyers, and at three Montreal-area stores between April and October 2021. While the products were promoted as being on sale—with discounts shown as either a percentage or a dollar amount off an original price, an analysis of the data revealed that “products were rarely, if ever, actually listed at the original price,” the Montreal Gazette reported. Canadian Tire pleaded guilty in relation to five of the seven products examined. These included knife sets by Henckels and Cuisinart, cookware sets by Lagostina and Heritage, and a DeWalt drill. The company was fined $1.28 million plus fees in connection with the 74 charges filed by the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, the outlet reported.
Canadian Tire false advertising ruling comes a week before Canadian Tire Corporation is preparing to release its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 financial results, which are expected on February 13.
