WestJet Airlines
A Christmas Eve flight to Mexico meant to mark the start of a relaxing holiday instead left a Canadian passenger feeling humiliated, after he alleges a WestJet flight attendant made an inappropriate gesture and comment moments before landing.

The allegation stems from a WestJet-operated flight en route to Mazatlán International Airport (MZT), where Alberta resident and military veteran Dave Rogers says a flight attendant’s gesture and remark in the final moments before landing left him embarrassed and shaken.

Rogers said the Christmas Eve flight unfolded smoothly despite stormy departure conditions, with otherwise pleasant cabin service.

As the aircraft descended and the cabin was readied for landing, Rogers said a flight attendant came by to collect trash, prompting him to hold up his two empty cans, expecting nothing more than a routine exchange.

But instead, the crew member pointed at the cans, mimicked a stomach, tapping his abdomen, and made a comment suggesting weight gain. Rogers said the interaction and took place in full view of nearby passengers.

According to Aviation A2Z website, Rogers said he was shocked and offended, noting that in his military service, he had never encountered similar treatment while flying.

Airline’s response

Rogers contacted WestJet to report the incident, and while the airline quickly apologized, it said compensation was not possible due to insufficient evidence.

WestJet issued a public statement acknowledging the allegation and confirming an internal review, assuring that the matter would be addressed directly with the guest. Rogers, who regularly flies with the airline, said he generally finds WestJet staff professional and courteous.

While he viewed the incident as isolated, he noted its emotional impact lasted throughout his vacation.

Rogers said there had been no prior joking to invite the remark, aside from brief holiday greetings. After landing, discussions with his wife, another passenger, and later family members in Mazatlán reinforced that the behavior was inappropriate.
