George Russell of Mercedes clinched his first victory of the Formula One’s 2025 season at the Canadian Grand Prix after McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided in the closing laps, ending their podium hopes.

Starting from pole, Russell held off pressure from Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the entire race to secure a dramatic win for Mercedes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Verstappen, who had hoped to win for a record fourth year in a row, finished second, while Russell's 18-year-old teammate Kimi Antonelli claimed third position for his first F1 podium finish.

The Brit had to endure an anxious six-hour wait after crossing the finish line before his Canadian Grand Prix victory was officially confirmed. Red Bull had lodged a protest, claiming Russell drove erratically under the Safety Car that led the field following the McLaren collision. However, race stewards ultimately rejected the protest, stamping Russell's victory.

What had been a relatively uneventful afternoon turned chaotic in the closing laps when Lando Norris collided with the rear of teammate Oscar Piastri’s car while attempting an overtake - an incident long anticipated amid their intensifying title rivalry.

Piastri was running fourth as the Safety Car led the field on the final lap, pulling into the pits just in time for Russell to cross the finish line and take the chequered flag.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth, followed by Fernando Alonso in seventh for Aston Martin.

Nico Hulkenberg secured eighth for Sauber, Esteban Ocon was ninth for Haas in their 200th race, and Carlos Sainz ended up at 10th for Williams.
