Canada Post’s latest proposal

The discussions come after Canada Post presents its latest contract proposals on Wednesday(May 28).

The Crown corporation described these as "enhanced offers," despite reporting a significant operating loss of nearly $1.3 billion for 2024 and a revenue decline of $800 million, or 12.2 percent, compared to the previous year.

Key elements of the new proposals include a signing bonus of $1,000 for full-time employees and $500 for others, along with a revised cost-of-living allowance that activates at a lower inflation threshold of 7.16 percent, down from 13.59 percent. Additionally, Canada Post has committed to ending mandatory overtime.

CUPW’s reaction

However, the CUPW has expressed reservations, stating that the proposals "fall short" of their expectations. The union highlighted concerns over issues such as part-time flex staffing, weekend delivery, dynamic routing, and load leveling, which they claim remain non-negotiable under the current offers.

National strike

The backdrop to these negotiations includes a 32-day national strike that occurred from November 15 to December 17, 2024. This labor action significantly impacted Canada Post's operations, contributing to a net negative financial effect of $208 million toward the company's $841-million loss before tax for the year.

As the union continues to review the latest proposals, the outcome of these discussions holds substantial implications for the future of Canada Post and its workforce.
