The overtime ban, initiated by CUPW on May 23, directs members to refuse work beyond eight hours per day or 40 hours per week. This legal strike action affects both urban and rural postal workers, leading to potential delays in mail and parcel deliveries.
The dispute centers on key issues, including worker pay, the use of temporary workers, weekend delivery, benefits and pensions, and Canada Post's financial challenges. The union has expressed concerns about the erosion of full-time positions and the increasing reliance on temporary staff.
Collective agreements between Canada Post and CUPW expired last week, with the union having given a 72-hour strike notice last Monday and then opting for an overtime ban, which is a legal strike action.
Canada Post has acknowledged the significant impact of the ongoing uncertainty on its operations, reporting a 50 percent decline in parcel volumes compared to the same period last year. The corporation emphasizes the urgency of reaching an agreement to stabilize services and address financial sustainability.
