Canada launches new alert system for extreme weather; Colour-coded system marks shift to impact-based forecasting
Canada has launched a new colour-coded weather alert system to enhance public safety during extreme weather events. Yellow, orange, and red alerts will now indicate rising levels of severity and risk, helping Canadians quickly understand potential...

“We continue to experience more frequent and extreme weather in Canada, which makes it more important than ever for Canadians to have access to clear, accurate, and easy-to-understand weather alerts,” Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin said in a statement.
“By improving how severe weather is reported, we are helping Canadians better understand and prepare for potential impacts, so they can make informed decisions about how and when to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property.”
According to ECCC, all weather alerts - Warnings, Advisories, and Watches - now feature a colour scale from yellow to orange to red, indicating the severity of the weather event.
- Yellow Alerts: Most common; issued when hazardous weather may cause moderate, localized, or short-term damage, disruption, or health impacts.
- Orange Alerts: Issued when severe weather is likely to cause significant damage, disruption, or health impacts. Effects can be major, widespread, and may last several days.
- Red Alerts: Rare; issued for very dangerous, potentially life-threatening weather that can lead to extreme, widespread, and prolonged damage and disruption.

Unlike traditional threshold-based alerts, which rely solely on specific weather measurements - such as '10 centimetres of snow in a set number of hours' - the new approach is impact-based, focusing on the potential effects of upcoming weather. Wagar noted that this shift aligns Canada’s forecasting more closely with guidance from the World Meteorological Organization.
