Canada Election 2025: What's open and closed on polling and result day

Millions of Canadians are heading to the polls today for a snap federal election, with much of the campaign centered on how candidates would address U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats and his provocative call to make Canada the 51st state.

Millions of Canadians are casting their votes today in the 45th national election to choose a new government. As the nation engages in the democratic process, questions arise about what remains operational on polling and results day.

The Canada election is being held at a time of heightened economic uncertainty and amid a simmering trade dispute with the United States, adding further weight to the stakes.

Canada Polling: Timings and Voting Procedure

Polling stations across Canada opened at staggered times according to the country’s six time zones.

In Newfoundland, voting commenced at 8:30 am local time (11:00 GMT), while in British Columbia, polls opened at 7:00 am (14:00 GMT). Each polling centre will remain open for 12 hours, ensuring voters have ample opportunity to cast their ballots.

As per Canada’s election rules, citizens must vote at their designated polling stations based on their home address. Voters are required to provide government-issued identification to receive their ballots.

The candidate with the most votes in each riding secures a seat in the House of Commons, and the party with the most seats typically forms the government. Unlike in some democracies, Canadians do not vote directly for their prime minister.

When will the Canadian election results be known?

Ballot counting begins immediately after the close of polls in each region. Preliminary results are expected to start emerging by 8:30 pm local time (23:00 GMT), particularly from regions like Newfoundland, where polls close earlier.

Elections Canada, the independent agency overseeing the process, anticipates that the “vast majority” of votes will be tallied on election night itself.

Media outlets will project winners based on incoming data.

However, official final Canada election results will be formally certified and posted several months later.

Similarly, Canada Post offices and major banking institutions continue their operations as usual on Monday, April 28.

Under the Canada Elections Act, employees are entitled to three consecutive hours off work to vote, though the timing is left to the discretion of the employer.

Why Canada Polling Is Held on a Monday

Canada's federal election day traditionally falls on a Monday, following legislation that mandates elections be held after a campaign period lasting between 37 and 51 days.

The rationale behind Monday elections is to provide Canadians with a full weekend to make necessary arrangements and allow election officials ample time to prepare polling sites.

If a scheduled election coincides with a public holiday, such as Thanksgiving, the election is postponed to the following Tuesday. A notable example occurred in 2008 when the election was held on Tuesday, October 14, instead of the usual Monday.

Leading Parties and Key Candidates

This Canada election sees interim Prime Minister Mark Carney, representing the Liberal Party, facing strong competition from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Other contenders include Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and Yves-François Blanchet of the Bloc Québécois. The Green Party and the People's Party are also participating, though they are not expected to secure significant gains.
