Emergency medical services attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene. According to the news outlet, police later identified the victim as 36-year-old Darren James Currat.
Investigators arrested Christopher Boyd O’Chiese, 31, approximately five hours after the incident. Strathcona County RCMP stated that O’Chiese lived in the same apartment complex as Currat. O’Chiese has since been charged with second-degree murder. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in a St. Albert court on Monday.
Meanwhile, in another incident that occurred in New Brunswick, a 21-year-old man from Fredericton died following a single-vehicle crash near Oromocto on Friday evening (May 8, 2026). RCMP officers responded to the single-vehicle crash on Route 2, under the overpass for Route 7 in Haneytown, N.B., at approximately 7:52 p.m., New Brunswick RCMP said in a police news release. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.
Police said they believe the eastbound vehicle lost control, left the road, and struck a concrete pillar. One lane was closed on Route 2, but it has since reopened.
