Severe orange cold warnings have been issued for much of Saskatchewan and Manitoba as frigid northern air moves southward through Canada.
The cold air is moving eastward from the Prairies, having originally descended from far northern regions.
“As far as where that air mass is coming from, there’s actually a blocking pattern currently over Alaska and into Greenland,” Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlinson said, according to CTV News website. He added, “That’s where that atmospheric circulation is able to bring us some of that cold air down south through the Prairies and other parts of Canada.”
Environment Canada has issued orange weather warnings for the Prairies and northern Ontario as a multi-day stretch of dangerously cold wind chills, ranging from -40°C to -50°C, continues.
Most of Ontario remains under a yellow hazardous weather warning this weekend, with wind chills of -30°C to -45°C and southern regions facing periods of near-zero visibility from blowing snow.
“There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Road closures are possible,” they added.
Southern Quebec faces wind chills of -35°C to -40°C, while northern areas could drop to -45°C to -50°C under a yellow warning. Eastern Alberta faces wind chills of -40°C to -45°C under a yellow warning.
Atlantic Canada braces for extreme cold, with orange warnings in Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls, and Churchill Valley as wind chills drop to -40°C to -50°C from Saturday to Tuesday, while most of Newfoundland will face gusty winds and wind chills of -20°C to -28°C through Monday.
The Maritimes face yellow cold warnings, with wind chills as low as -37°C this weekend. A winter storm may hit Nova Scotia Sunday night, while New Brunswick sees -30°C to -39°C wind chills from Saturday to Sunday.
