‘Big Boy’ a well known bear found dead on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast; investigation underway
A large adult black bear, known locally as 'Big Boy,' was discovered deceased on a residential road on the Sunshine Coast. The BC Conservation Officer Service is investigating the unusual circumstances surrounding its death, as there were no visib...

As per CBC, community members reported no visible sign of bleeding near the carcass, and officials have not yet determined the cause of death.
Local residents had affectionately referred to the bear as “Big Boy,” noting he had been seen in the area and was well-known within the community as a large and typically non-aggressive animal.
Wildlife observers speculated that given the timing, soon after bears emerge from winter hibernation, the bear appeared healthy and in good condition before his unexpected death.
Experts and locals alike voiced confusion and concern because finding a bear lying in the middle of a road without obvious injuries is unusual and raises questions about whether vehicle collision, illness, or other factors may have been involved.
The BCCOS confirmed it is aware of the situation and is actively investigating, but has not released further details pending the outcome of its inquiry.
Conservation officers typically aim to rule out human-caused death and determine whether wildlife encountered hazards such as vehicle collisions, toxic substances, or natural causes.
British Columbia supports one of the largest populations of black bears in North America, estimated between 120,000 and 160,000 individuals, and authorities emphasize coexistence, safety, and proper handling of attractants to reduce harmful interactions between bears and humans.
