Calgary-based Cenovus Energy has confirmed that it is laying off employees, although the company has not specified how many people will be affected. The announcement comes as the oil and gas sector faces pressure from fluctuating global oil prices, environmental regulations, and the shift toward renewable energy.

In a statement issued on May 6, Cenovus said the layoffs are part of its ongoing efforts to manage costs and improve efficiency. The company emphasized supporting affected employees through the transition, offering severance and career support services where possible.

Cenovus previously cut about 2,000 jobs in 2021 following its merger with Husky Energy. At the time, the company cited the need to streamline operations and eliminate overlapping roles. Since then, the company has faced challenges from volatile market conditions and increased scrutiny over carbon emissions.

Industry analysts say the latest round of layoffs is part of a broader trend across the energy sector. Oil and gas companies are increasingly forced to adapt to a changing global energy landscape, with many investing in lower-carbon technologies while maintaining profitability.

While Cenovus remains one of Canada’s largest integrated oil and natural gas companies, its future depends on its ability to adapt to the current economic environment. The company says it focuses on maintaining strong production numbers while reducing its environmental footprint.

The Alberta government, which relies heavily on oil revenues, has expressed concern about job cuts in the sector. Officials have called for more worker support and efforts to diversify the province’s economy.

As Cenovus moves forward, more updates are expected in the coming weeks regarding the scale of the layoffs and the company’s long-term strategy.
