Alberta in shock after 3 junior hockey players killed in crash while heading to practice

The Southern Alberta Mustangs announced on social media that three of their players were killed in a motor vehicle collision on Monday. The victims were Cameron Casorso, 18, and JJ Wright, 18, both from Kamloops, British Columbia, and Caden Fine, 17, from Birmingham, Alabama. RCMP said officers responded to the crash at an intersection along Highway 2 in Stavely, roughly an hour’s drive south of Calgary. According to RCMP, as reported by the AP, the crash involved a northbound semi-truck hauling gravel and a small passenger vehicle traveling east. The semi-truck driver, a 40-year-old man from Stavely, suffered minor injuries.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith offered condolences to the families and teammates of Wright, Casorso and Fine. The Southern Alberta Mustangs are a United States Premier Hockey League team based in Stavely, Alberta.

“The whole Alberta hockey family is standing with you in sorrow and in prayer,” Smith wrote in a social media post on X. “In the days ahead, I know Albertans will wrap these families and this team in love and support as they navigate a pain no one should ever have to bear.”



The US Premier Hockey League team said in a Facebook post that it is working closely with authorities and has asked for privacy for the players’ families during this difficult time.

“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief," the team said. "These young men were more than hockey players - they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home. We are a family, and today our family is hurting.”


The Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League also expressed their support in a message shared on social media.: “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew them,” the team said.


In a statement, the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association said that Casorso and Wright grew up in the BC organization. Casorso played with the association from 2012 to 2025, while Wright was part of the program from 2011 to 2025.

“Although their journeys began here in Kamloops, they found a second hockey family and a new bond with the Southern Alberta Mustangs,” the statement said as quoted by AP.

“These three young men were teammates and friends to many. We are grieving together, as one hockey family forever changed by the loss of these young men.”
