Indigenous artists who were chosen for the event by Littlefeather, many of whom were her friends' children and grandkids, gave remarks and performed.
Littlefeather was joking and remembering her friendship with Brando while performing on stage. At 8:00 pm, the live broadcast started.
Brando, her buddy and the front-runner for the Oscar that year for his portrayal of mafia boss Vito Corleone, urged Littlefeather, an Apache and Yaqui, to attend the ceremony on his behalf, and decline the medal. She was only 26 years old.

She referred to the South Dakotan town of Wounded Knee's occupation in 1973, where a confrontation between American federal authorities and Lakota activists marked a turning point in the campaign for Native American rights.
Littlefeather addressed an audience, half of which applauded and half of which jeered as she spoke while wearing a buckskin dress and moccasins.

She said that when she was speaking onstage, actor John Wayne attempted to lunge at her and that she had been the object of racist harassment backstage.
She further said that a producer of the 1973 production threatened to have her arrested and imprisoned if she spoke for longer than 60 seconds. She had to improvise because Brando had given her an eight-page monologue to read.
Littlefeather, an actor then, claimed that Hollywood put her on a blacklist following the speech and tormented her for years.
