Canada unemployment at 6.2% in October

OTTAWA: Canada's employment rate was "little changed" in October as an increase in full-time jobs was mostly offset by a loss of part-time jobs, Statistics Canada said on Friday.

The unemployment rate meanwhile edged up 0.1 percentage points to 6.2 percent, as more people began looking for work last month.

With a federal election in October, the largest job gains were in public administration, up 40,000 nationally, while the hotel and food services industry lost 27,000 jobs mostly in Ontario and Quebec.

Year-to-date, older women saw the largest increase in employment than any other demographic groups such as youth, or older men, marking gains of 64,000 jobs. Canada created a total 9,500 new jobs in all industries in October.
