After putting limits to cloud gamin under Game Pass, Microsoft has rolled out standalond Cloud Gaming options
Microsoft is rolling out a standalone Xbox Cloud Gaming option that allows players to stream eligible games without a Game Pass subscription. The service is currently available to Xbox Insiders as part of a preview and is expected to roll out to all users in November.

During the preview, Xbox Insiders can purchase cloud playtime, stream games on supported devices and share feedback with Microsoft. The company is also allowing Insiders to try cloud gaming for free with ads, offering another way to access the service without subscribing to Game Pass.

The move comes after Microsoft introduced monthly cloud gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers in September. Under the revised limits, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers receive up to 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Game Pass Premium subscribers get 10 hours and Game Pass Essential subscribers get five hours.

"We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud. We expect this upcoming change to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers," Microsoft said at the time.

Subscribers who exhaust their included hours will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. However, available hours, purchasing options and cloud gaming features may vary by market.

What is Xbox Cloud Playtime?

Xbox Cloud Playtime is a pay-as-you-go option that allows players to stream eligible games without committing to a recurring Game Pass subscription.

Microsoft says cloud playtime packs provide an ad-free gaming experience, shorter waiting times, high-quality streaming and hours that remain available until they are used.

Players can purchase additional hours through the Xbox Store and stream eligible games they own on supported devices. The option is aimed at people who want occasional access to cloud gaming or prefer not to pay for a monthly subscription.

Xbox Cloud Playtime pricing

Microsoft has introduced the following introductory prices for Xbox Insiders during the preview:

  • 10 hours: $3.99
  • 25 hours: $7.99
  • 50 hours: $11.99
These are the introductory prices announced for the preview. Pricing and availability for the wider launch, including in India, may vary.

How Xbox Cloud Playtime could benefit Xbox One owners

Cloud gaming can also help Xbox One owners access eligible games developed for Xbox Series X|S without immediately upgrading their hardware.

The feature could be particularly useful in markets where newer consoles are expensive or less readily available. Instead of purchasing a new console to play supported titles, users can stream eligible games on compatible devices, subject to Microsoft's availability and hardware requirements.

Microsoft has also said it will continue adding cloud support for more games throughout the year.

Why is Microsoft introducing cloud playtime limits?

Microsoft said the changes reflect the rising cost of providing cloud gaming as more players use the service and spend longer playing.

"Because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer," the company explained, adding that monthly limits would help it maintain the service while continuing to invest in reliability and performance.

Microsoft acknowledged that the changes could increase costs for some players, particularly those who regularly spend extended periods gaming through the cloud.

The company previously said the new limits were expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers.

What happens when you run out of cloud gaming hours?

Game Pass subscribers who use all their included cloud gaming hours will be able to purchase additional playtime through the Xbox Store.

The standalone cloud playtime option offers another route for players who want to access cloud gaming without maintaining a Game Pass subscription. However, the games available for streaming will depend on Microsoft's eligibility requirements and the user's supported devices.

Microsoft is expected to provide further information about pricing, purchasing additional hours, eligible games, market availability and how players can check their remaining time in November.

"We’ll listen closely to player feedback before and after the change takes effect and share any adjustments we make," the company said.
