Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, a £130,000 luxury electric grand tourer that marks the British marque’s return to the market after a more than two-year hiatus as it reinvents itself as an all-electric luxury brand.

Orders for the four-door GT will open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected in the second half of the year, Jaguar said.

The model was unveiled in New York on Tuesday.

The Type 01 is the first new Jaguar model in eight years and is designed, engineered and built in the UK. It will be produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant, with its electric drive units and battery packs made in nearby Wolverhampton.

The launch is a crucial test for Jaguar after the brand halted sales of new cars in the UK in 2024 as part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at moving it upmarket and attracting younger buyers. Bloomberg reported that Jaguar’s annual sales had fallen to 66,900 in its final full year before the hiatus, roughly a third of the volume it produced after launching the I-Pace in 2018.

Jaguar said the Type 01 was its most powerful and technologically advanced road car yet, with more than 1,000PS and an 850-volt electrical architecture. It has an EPA-rated range of up to 400 miles (644 km) and can add 200 miles of range in 13 minutes using a 350kW rapid charger.

The car can accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, while its low roofline, long bonnet and sleek silhouette are designed to give the new model a distinct visual identity rooted in Jaguar’s heritage.

The launch also marks a broader attempt to reposition Jaguar around design, technology and luxury rather than volume sales. The brand said the Type 01 drew inspiration from historic models including the E-Type and XJS.

“Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to create objects of desire,” Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover said.

The choice of New York for the global premiere reflects the importance of the US market to Jaguar, even as demand for electric vehicles remains uncertain among American buyers.

The unveiling comes amid a challenging period for parent company Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.

It said earlier this year that is cutting around 4,000 jobs as it deals with US tariffs, the fallout from a cyberattack that disrupted production and intensifying competition from Chinese automakers.

Bloomberg reported that Jaguar had ended production of all its models in 2024 except the F-Pace SUV, which continued to be made in Britain for export, making the complete production pause an unusual step for a major carmaker.

The Type 01 is not intended to restore Jaguar to its previous sales volumes. The company expects to produce the new generation in relatively small numbers, positioning the brand firmly at the luxury end of the market.

The company said the Type 01 represented the start of a new chapter for Jaguar, with its all-electric strategy centred on a smaller range of high-end vehicles.
