Jaguar is looking beyond just selling an electric car. With the launch of its latest model, the Type 01, Jaguar aims to convince consumers that the British luxury brand, famous for building luxurious sports cars, can transform itself into an ultra-premium maker of electric cars, even if it means discarding many of its existing attributes. However, according to CNN, the Jaguar revival campaign is faced with the challenge of identifying enough wealthy buyers who want an expensive electric car from a brand that is in the process of redeeming its reputation.

The four-door electric grand tourer launched in New York in October 2026 packs a punch with over 1,000 horsepower and starts at $130,500.

The Type 01 is the first production model to emerge from Jaguar's radical rebranding, which began in 2024 and provoked a fierce reaction among enthusiasts. Its launch therefore carries two tests. The car must compete in a crowded luxury EV market, while the company must convince buyers that its new direction deserves the Jaguar name.

A 1,016-hp electric car marks Jaguar's break with its past

The Type 01 does not resemble the Jaguars which established the name of the marque at all. The long bonnet, low roofline, wide body and enormous 23-inch wheels are reminiscent of a classic grand tourer’s proportions, yet the design is much harsher compared to the previous iterations from the brand.

The emblematic leaping Jaguar figure has been removed from the bonnet, while the round headlamps have been replaced by something else entirely, conforming to the new style direction announced by the Type 00 concept in 2024.

According to CNN’s article about the new car unveiling, the Type 01 was created to target a different audience among luxury buyers. Rather than being based on the nostalgic approach to car design, Jaguar aims to create cars that will appeal to those who consider design, exclusivity and technology as status symbols.

The numbers in terms of performance are just as impressive. There are three electric motors that deliver 1,016 horsepower combined, and a 118-kWh battery that will ensure a 400-mile range under ideal conditions. According to Jaguar, the car reaches 60mph from 0mph in 3.1 seconds.

All in all, Jaguar's Type 01 certainly fits into the class of high-performance cars. However, it won’t be able to stand out in the market where existing manufacturers of luxury cars, as well as newcomers producing electric cars, have their own powerful competitors.

Jaguar's real problem is finding the right buyers

The harder part is who will foot the bill.

A car at $130,500 isn’t meant to rival cheaper electric sedans or be marketed to a wide array of consumers as Jaguar once did. The price puts it in the realm of customers who could shop for luxury cars from other automakers, such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lucid.

CNN spoke with automotive experts who raised doubts about whether there are enough consumers in this demographic who would be willing to buy an expensive electric sedan or grand tourer. It is especially pertinent in the United States, where the demand for electric vehicles has been under pressure.

“They were looking for a new buyer entirely, in the sense that it’s not old school luxury at all,” Stephanie Brinley, principal automotive analyst for Mobility Global, told the news outlet.

Price is also a factor that indicates that Jaguar assumes most of its customers will own multiple cars. These people would feel more at ease with a specialist electric grand tourer rather than using it as their only vehicle.

The luxury car maker believes in exclusivity and does not want to indulge in a price war with the other mass-produced electric vehicle makers. It plans to target a more premium market niche where design and brand identity make up the key factors.

This marketing approach, however, leaves no scope for uncertainty about the product identity. People who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars want nothing but the best from the company.

The controversial rebrand is now a business test

Jaguar’s makeover started even before the Type 01 entered the production phase. At the start of 2024, Jaguar revealed a fresh look, which was quite different from those things with which it was traditionally associated.

This move was met with fierce criticism since some believed that Jaguar was turning its back on those who had been buying its cars for years. The pink-painted Type 00 concept demonstrated just how far the company was ready to go.

As CNN highlighted, this event also revived the image of the company that has not been doing well in recent years, as it has been suffering from old-fashioned models and lacking momentum.

The Type 01 now needs to translate this fascination into commercial success. The car itself embodies many of the features of the concept in its styling, thereby proving that the prior campaign was no mere marketing stunt.

This is more than just the problem of one car. Jaguar plans to market its future products in the same luxurious category; the Type 01 thus needs to determine if its target consumers are willing to accept Jaguar's new direction.

“They need to find buyers that are willing and interested in the electric space, and there has been a lack of interest to some degree for electric vehicles in the higher-end sedan market,” Brinley further told CNN.

Success can help Jaguar pave the way for its future models. Failure can indicate that Jaguar has possibly mistaken its market, prices, or even identity.

Tesla is only one part of Jaguar's uphill climb

The first obvious comparison is Tesla, but this is only part of the challenge Jaguar faces since the Type 01 competes with several electric cars, including the Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Benz EQS and Lucid Air.

Each car offers a certain competitive advantage ranging from being associated with luxury to having high performance, the latest technology or experience with electric cars.

According to analysts cited by CNN, there are also differences in outlook on regional markets, where some areas like Europe and parts of Asia may provide good chances of success as EV use grows, while the situation will be more difficult in the USA because of the higher price.

Orders for the Type 01 are expected to start coming in early 2027, with delivery to customers scheduled for the second half of that year. Thus, Jaguar faces an important test ahead when it needs to show how successful it can be in its attempt at reinvention.

It looks like Jaguar has demonstrated that it is not afraid of making unusual choices, and now it will have to prove that this approach can be appreciated by customers.
