Frankfurt: Germany's Bayer said it will invest $2.2 billion (1.95 billion euros) in a new American pharmaceutical site, as drugmakers face pressure from the Trump administration to expand manufacturing in the United States.

The facility in New Albany, Ohio, builds on more than $7 billion in investments by Bayer in US pharma research and development and manufacturing over the past five years, the group said.

"Bayer has long seen the United States as a key manufacturing base and innovation hub," said Bayer CEO Bill Anderson in a statement late Friday.

"This landmark investment underscores our commitment."

US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on some patented pharmaceuticals made abroad and plans to slap levies on generic drug imports from 2028, seeking to bring more pharmaceutical production to the United States.

Companies that commit to build plants in the United States are expected to face lower rates than those that rely on imports.

Bayer, also a leading manufacturer of agricultural chemicals, said the site in New Albany will create around 600 "high-value jobs".

It will also create around 1,500 construction jobs while the facility is being built, Bayer said.

The site will focus on pharmaceuticals in the areas of cancer, heart and kidney care.

The first part of the facility is expected to go into operation in 2031 and the second part in 2034, it said.
