Boeing appoints Kelly Ortberg as new CEO and President
Boeing has appointed Kelly Ortberg as the new President and CEO, effective August 8, 2024, succeeding Dave Calhoun. Ortberg's primary challenge will be to turn around the company's financial woes, including a $1.4 billion loss and setbacks in its ...

The leadership change comes at a crucial time for Boeing, which recently reported a $1.4 billion quarterly loss. The company's Defense, Space, and Security unit has significantly contributed to these losses due to cost overruns on fixed-price contracts. These contracts, which have high margins, have made Boeing vulnerable to inflationary pressures that have impacted U.S. corporate earnings in recent years. In 2023 and 2022 alone, the unit's losses amounted to billions of dollars.
Reuters reported that Boeing's commercial aircraft production has also faced considerable setbacks. In January, a cabin panel on a 737 MAX 9 jet blew off midair, leading to a production slowdown and intense regulatory scrutiny. The U.S. aviation regulator has capped the production of 737 MAX jets at 38 per month, but actual production has sometimes been lower. This has led to reduced deliveries and frustrated customers, with Boeing delivering 92 aircraft in the second quarter of this year, down 32% from the previous year.
To address these challenges, Boeing has announced a strategic pivot away from aggressive bidding on fixed-price contracts, which have proven financially risky. "Ahead of last week's Farnborough Air Show, the unit's head had said it was 'significantly challenged' during the quarter," highlighting the need for a strategic shift. Boeing CFO Brian West stated in May that the company will "burn rather than generate cash in 2024," due to lower jet deliveries compared to the previous year.
