GENEVA : Brazil says it is likely to ask the World Trade Organization to open a blockbuster case into US ethanol tariffs.
Brazil's WTO ambassador Roberto Azevedo says there is a ``strong possibility'' that the Latin American country will make a formal complaint in September. Brazil would then be able to ask for the establishment of a WTO panel if consultations with the United States fail.
Azevedo commented on the possible dispute Wednesday, a day after global trade talks collapsed in Geneva. There is speculation a rash of new trade disputes may now follow.
The case would concern a US ethanol tariff of 54 cents per gallon. Critics say the tax is designed to protect American corn farmers who cannot produce the fuel as cheaply as sugarcane growers in Brazil.
