Boeing to delay 787 delivery

A British newspaper says on its Website that US aircraft maker Boeing on Wednesday will announce that its new, cost-efficient 787 airliner will be delayed again by months.

LONDON: A British newspaper says on its Website that US aircraft maker Boeing on Wednesday will announce that its new, cost-efficient 787 airliner will be delayed again by months.

A spokesman for Boeing's London office declined to comment but said a company announcement was expected at 1230 GMT from its Chicago headquarters.

The Times reported that the aircaft is unlikely to enter service until the end of 2009 instead of an already delayed date of early 2009. The report cited unidentified sources.

It said the delay would affect airline customers including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, and that airlines "are likely to demand billions in compensation from Boeing."

The new plane has won strong orders and is expected to cut fuel costs for airlines.
