MEXICO CITY: The defense arm of US aerospace giant Boeing has signed a contract to build three satellites for Mexico for some one billion dollars, the Mexican communications ministry said on Monday.

The Mexican government signed the deal for around one billion US dollars for three satellites for a new Mexican system to be launched from 2012, a statement said. They will be used for national security, telecommunications and assistance in emergency situations, it added.

The government last October said three new satellites would be launched from 2012 to 2014.
