BMW buys Italian bike maker Husqvarna

German luxury car maker BMW said Friday it had agreed to buy Italian cross-country motorcycle specialist Husqvarna Motorcycles for an undisclosed sum.

MUNICH: German luxury car maker BMW said Friday it had agreed to buy Italian cross-country motorcycle specialist Husqvarna Motorcycles for an undisclosed sum.

BMW said in a statement that the acquisition, which has yet to be approved by the European competition authorities, would enable it to expand its range of lightweight and sports motorcycles.

Husqvarna Motorcycles would continue to operate as an independent unit and its facilities in the northern Italian region of Varese would be maintained, the car maker said.

"With the Husqvarna models, which are focused on sports competitions, we can expand the range of BMW Motorrad to younger target groups as well as to the entire offroad and supermoto segment," said BMW's motorcycle division head, Herbert Diess.

"And we will have access to a global sales network in the off-road segment."

BMW's motorcycle division last year for the first time sold more than 100,000 motorcycles. The unit makes only large-volume motocycles, generating sales of 1.26 billion euros (1.75 billion dollars) last year.
