Barclays to raise $6 bn, may buy ‘distressed’ rivals

Barclays, Britain’s thirdbiggest bank is in “advanced talks” with sovereign wealth funds to secure more than 3 billion pounds ($5.9 billion) in funding and is mulling buying “distressed” rivals, the media reported.

The bank has ���stepped up��� talks with investors from China, Abu Dhabi and elsewhere in the Middle East and Asia, the London-based newspaper said, citing unnamed advisers to Barclays. China Development Bank, which already holds a stake in Barclays, is among those in talks with the British bank about providing capital, the media reported.
